The Ansellia africana is widely spred throughout tropical Africa. Although this plant can be found in a variety of natural habitats, the Ansellia africana usually grows in open wooded areas in hot, dry climate below 700 meters.

The flowers have a strong, musky scent and are 2,5-3 cm in diameter. The extremely variable coloured flowers usually apper in late spring and summer.

Ansellia africana needs a light level of 25000-40000 lux. The plants need a lot of bright light to bloom, but should be protected from midday sun.

Average summer daily temperature 25-26 degrees, night 18-19 degrees.

Average winter daily temperature 21 degrees, night 9-11 degrees.

During resting period they like cool night time temperature.

Humidity should be around 70-75% for most of the year dropping to 65% for about 2-3 months in the winter.

Ansellia africana grows best in a large container. Always use good quality orchid mix.

Rainfall is relatively low throughout the year with a shorter period of dry season in the winter.

During the active growing season use fertilizer which is high in nitrogen then from late summer to autumn use phosphorus rich fertilizer.

Ansellia africana should be kept dry during winter to induce flowering. Occasional fogging in the early morning between rare watering should be enough.

Reduce or eliminate fertilization until new growths apper.
